Director of Bands

Location: Hickory, North Carolina 

The Lenoir-Rhyne University College of Fine Arts and Communication (Hickory Campus) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment as Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music. We seek a colleague dedicated to collaborating within our thriving Music program; building a welcoming, inclusive environment; and creating a transformative student learning experience. Appointment begins August 2024.

Responsibilities include conducting the Wind Symphony and leading the ‘Spirit of LR’ marching band; set design and arranging; establishing relationships with public school educators; leading student recruitment efforts in coordination with the Office of Admissions; and serving as a liaison with state associations and in the broader musical community. Teaching responsibilities include courses in instrumental music education, including instrumental music methods and conducting; mentoring and observation of music education students in internship and clinical settings; and teaching that supports the liberal arts general education curriculum. The ideal colleague will promote best practices in teacher education through innovative pedagogy and an inclusive approach to literature and representation.

A Doctoral degree in Music (D.M.A. or Ph.D.) is preferred; an M.M. in Music Education, Conducting, or a closely related field is required. The ideal colleague will demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student mentorship, scholarly/professional engagement, and University service. Experience leading high school or college bands preferred. Specifically, successful applicants will have a broad knowledge of instrumental performance genres; fluency in educational computer technology; strong leadership and collaborative skills; the ability to track budgets effectively/efficiently; excellent communication and creative problem-solving skills; and the ability to grasp, lift, and move objects up to 50 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders.
